Understanding Trauma & PTSD

Knowledge is the first act of healing. Explore Dr. Flores' comprehensive guide to trauma, its history, causes, and treatment.

What Is Trauma?

Trauma is an emotional response so overwhelming the nervous system cannot process it normally — leaving it vivid, raw, and dangerously close to the present moment.

Causes & Risk Factors

PTSD emerges from the interaction of pre-event vulnerabilities, the nature of the trauma, and post-event support. Understanding why matters for treatment.

Symptoms & Impact

Treatment
That Works

Modern trauma treatment is among the most effective in all of psychiatry. With the right approach, the majority of survivors achieve lasting recovery.

All Treatment Modalities
  • EMDR Therapy

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing — helps the brain reprocess traumatic memories without reliving them.

  • Trauma-Focused CBT

Cognitive restructuring of trauma-related thoughts combined with gradual, safe exposure to feared memories.

  • Somatic Therapy

Body-centered approaches addressing how trauma is physically stored — working with nervous system regulation.

  • Prolonged Exposure

A structured CBT protocol that systematically reduces PTSD symptoms through controlled exposure to trauma reminders.

  • Narrative Therapy

Helping survivors separate identity from trauma — authoring a new story not defined by what happened to them.

Patient Testimonials

Dr. Flores helped me understand that what happened to me was not my fault, and that healing wasn't just possible — it was inevitable with the right support.
