Overview

Dr. Suzana E. Flores is a licensed clinical psychologist, internationally recognized author, and sought-after public speaker with a specialization in trauma, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), and Complex-PTSD. With over a decade of clinical experience, she has established herself as one of the leading voices in the field of trauma psychology in the United States.

Currently practicing in New Orleans, Louisiana through her NOLA Wellness practice, Dr. Flores brings a compassionate, evidence-based approach to the treatment of trauma survivors — from veterans returning from combat to individuals emerging from abusive relationships, first responders, and survivors of childhood trauma.

Education & Training

Dr. Flores earned her Doctorate in Clinical Psychology from Argosy University, where her research centered on the neurological and psychological impact of traumatic stress. Her Master of Counseling Psychology from Loyola University Chicago grounded her in the humanistic traditions of psychology — an influence that remains central to her clinical style.

She is trained in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT), and a range of somatic and narrative therapeutic modalities.

Clinical Career

Prior to entering private practice, Dr. Flores held several influential clinical leadership positions:

  • Lead Clinician — Carolinas Healthcare System, where she managed a clinical team providing trauma and crisis services to diverse patient populations across a major healthcare network.
  • Director of Counseling — The Illinois Institute of Art, where she developed and led a campus mental health program serving undergraduate and graduate students.
  • Adjunct Professor — The Chicago School of Professional Psychology, where she taught courses in clinical psychology, trauma, and abnormal psychology to the next generation of mental health professionals.

Author & Public Speaker

Dr. Flores is the author of two published works that have reached audiences far beyond the clinical setting:

Facehooked (2014) — A groundbreaking exploration of the psychological impact of social media on mental health, self-esteem, and relationships. The book identified eight core problems with Facebook use and provided practical tools for healthier digital behavior. It received national and international media attention.

Untamed — A psychological profile of Marvel's Wolverine, exploring the antihero's enduring appeal as an allegory for resilience through trauma, PTSD, and the human need for identity and belonging.

As a speaker and media commentator, Dr. Flores has appeared on national and international newscasts, podcasts, radio programs, and has delivered keynote presentations on trauma, psychology, and mental wellness to professional and lay audiences alike.

Philosophy of Care

At the heart of Dr. Flores' clinical philosophy is a profound belief in the resilience of the human spirit. She approaches each patient as an individual whose trauma is unique — not a diagnosis to be managed, but a person to be understood.

Her work is guided by the conviction that trauma is not a character flaw or a sign of weakness. It is a normal response to abnormal circumstances — and with evidence-based treatment, compassionate support, and the development of self-knowledge, healing is achievable for the vast majority of survivors.
